Inclusivity, Diversity and Equality Review

Contact: idereview@camra.org.uk

Following discussion around tackling discrimination in the beer and pub industry CAMRA launched the Inclusion, Diversity and Equality Review Group to ensure members and non-members do not suffer discrimination and feel safe and welcome within the organisation and at its events.

The Review looked at CAMRA’s existing equality and diversity policies and processes to identify any gaps, weakness or improvements that can be made. The Group will also reviewed the organisation’s Disciplinary processes and policies to ensure nothing is discouraging people from reporting discrimination, harassment or abuse – and that when it is reported, it is being dealt with appropriately.

Final report

The Review Group’s full final report, with recommendations as accepted by the National Executive, is available for download as a pdf here or as a word document for use with screen readers here.

A quick reference sheet listing the recommendations is also available in two formats. Get the pdf here, or the word document here.

Review group members

Bianca Ambrose (she/her)

Bianca runs a women’s beer group for her local CAMRA branch. In her professional life she works as a social scientist for government, her volunteering roles include time as a school governor and trustee. In these roles Bianca has researched equality, diversity and inclusion issues, worked on widening access and inclusion in employment and education, and has built up an understanding of EqIAs, equality standards and public sector duties in this area.

Angela Aspin

A very active CAMRA member for 20 years in October 2021. I have spent hours sitting on a large number committees, even more hours working at beer festivals and have held various roles. As a former regional POTY Judge I like nothing better than a pint in one of the best pubs in the country and have visited every National POTY winner since the competitions inception. As a former CBOB Judge, beer quality at CAMRA beer festivals is of special interest to me and I have spent over 10 years honing my cooling and dispense skills. As a former RD working and communicating with others came naturally, so much so that I was overwhelmingly voted in for three, three year terms. This framework gives me a very broad perspective on the membership. What I want to focus on is the integration of all age groups.

Darren Cryer

I have been a member of Camra for 25 years. Since 1995 I have worked in the disability rights sector both on a paid and voluntary level. I am disabled myself with Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. Since 1995 I have worked with several charities which work for disabled people and charities run by disabled people. My work has included public speaking, organising and hosting workshops on subjects like access to further education, moving out of home, access to employment and coping with bullying within the workplace.

Roy Denney

Roy joined CAMRA in its very early days and apart from a short gap when he moved house and job has been a member ever since. He is on the committees and acts as editor for a number of sports organisations and is active in local government. He is currently Scrutiny Commissioner of his District Council and was until recently Chairman of the Licensing Committee. A campaigner on environmental matters his hobbies include hill walking, travel especially in the UK, cooking and conversation. He likes to ‘collect’ pubs and has a comprehensive catalogue of the better ones he has found. Favourite pastime; putting the world to rights in a good pub, with good company, quaffing real ale often with good pub grub.

Chess Dudman

Jess Corbett-Collins / Lawrence

Jess is former secretary for CAMRA’s Commercial and Communications committee. Outside of CAMRA, I work for a leading technology company who manages critical digital infrastructure, and I am a member their ED&I steering group. I work to help the company identify gaps in representation of protected groups, and solving these issues and blockers. As a bid manager, I regularly review the company’s Social Value policies. In my previous company, I was chair of the BLM group, (which fed into the company’s wider D&I group). Having experienced discrimination, both in and out of the campaign, I welcome the opportunity to be part of this new group.

Lorna Garvey

Flick Hamnett-Day

Ellie Hudspith

Ellie is CAMRA’s Senior Campaigns Manager, and has worked in the CAMRA Campaigns Team for six years. Away from CAMRA, she was a District Councillor for two years, is a trained trainer, and volunteers providing training and mentoring services for the political party that she was a Councillor for. She has a detailed knowledge of standards procedures, complaints processes, and equalities duties of local authorities.
