Almost tucked in under the shadow of the Northgate, this pub has a single bar serving two contrasting areas. One side has sports area with pool table, TV and gaming machine. The other side is tastefully decorated with french windows leading to a neatly laid out garden with a deck patio. The garden has a smoking shelter and outdoor TV and it also gives access to the town car park and weekend outdoor market.
Historic Interest
The Bear or Brown Bear is situated at 24 Northgate but has also been found listed at 28 Northgate in 1868. The origin of the name is unknown, but there are two ideas that it was either the whim of a former landlord or it was a place where the cruel sport of bear baiting was practised before it became illegal in 1835. This grade II listed establishment once brewed its own beer as the coppers and handpump can still be seen in the former brewhouse at the rear. There is also a 14' 6" well but it is now covered over.
