Chequers, Fowlmere

Upmarket, food-oriented, 16th century coaching inn. Drinkers will feel most comfortable in the low-level area to the left of the bar as this has a good pubby feel to it. Food can be taken in the galleried restaurant, the large conservatory, the bar itself (which features a roaring log fire in winter) or under parasols in the attractive garden.

Nene Valley Brewery provides the house bitter. 3 guest beers are usually very interesting. The food is home cooked and includes meat the pub's own cattle and pigs.

Historic Interest

Samuel Pepys spent the night here in 1660. More recently it's connection have been with the former local airfields. RAF Fowlmere was used by the RAF during the first world war and early part of the second world war. By 1944 it was used by the 339th fighter group of the 8th Army Airforce. This later fact is commemorated on the pub sign.
