The Crown Inn has served Broxbourne for several hundred years, dating back to the 1700's. Popular with Victorian day-trippers, the inn was also used by local companies who liked their employees to play sports on the adjacent gardens.
The current building was constructed in the 1930s, replacing The Old Crown Hotel. Broxbourne, including the railway station, is situated in Herts, but The Crown is across on the east bank of the River Lee in Essex, where here the river is the boundary between the two counties. Today The Crown is easily accessed by the 2023 road bridge improvement over the railway and by going down Old Nazeing Road and crossing the river.
This large pub is sited on a bend of the river with a pleasant garden. To the right of the entrance is the public/saloon style bar where there are generally at least three nation real ales on sale. To the left is the extensive restaurant rooms, which lead onto the garden area. This is by the old tow path of the river and overlooks the boat hire centre.
