A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on Aug-14 in 1860 when John Ruffells was the landlord states that : "Ruffles was charged with selling beer before 12.30 on a Sunday morning. He said that he saw nothing wrong in it, the Bench asked had he not read his license. He replied he was no scholar & the Bench retorted he should not take a public house unless he was a scholar.
