Freeman Street has more nicknamed pubs than any other street in town. Originally the Freemasons’ Arms, it became The Rainbow for no apparent reason because the place didn’t change. Originally a Darley’s Thorne brewery house, it was run for many years by lady licensee who didn’t stand any nonsense - essential in the days when fishermen enjoyed their couple of days home to the full. Quieter these days, it retains the traditional layout of bar and lounge. Sadly, the old atmosphere no longer exists with the virtual extinction of fishing.
