George Inn, Portsmouth

This late 18th century Grade II listed building was once two cottages and also contained Old Widley Fire Station, which is still in evidence today on the north side of the building. Now a comfortable and homely pub, the house was listed in 1972 and is very popular with both locals and passers-by. Located at the original crossroads where London Road bisects Portsdown Hill Road, the outside seating areas offer fine views across Portsmouth, Langstone Harbour and the Isle of Wight. A time capsule was put in place 1977 under the patio and is due to be opened 2027. The bar is divided into three distinct areas and contains a large collection of breweriana, such as old bottles, beer mats, glasses and signage, notably from Portsmouth's long defunct Brickwoods brewery. A number of pewter tankards hang above the bar, together with a yard of ale. The pub is comfortably furnished throughout, with traditional tables and chairs and upholstered bench seats and has a shove halfpenny table. Low-level piped music is played throughout the day. Seven well-kept real ales are sold - five regular beers from large regionals, plus monthly guest beers, usually sourced from local micros. Live bands are hosted on Tuesdays at 9pm and a music quiz is held every other Sunday evening. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the pub. The pub is a member of the Timothy Taylor Champion Club.
