Castle Inn, Lydford

You want to visit - You have this in

With its' low ceilings, slate flooring and exposed beams, this cosy 16th century inn has bundles of atmosphere. The four regular ales are supplemented by a guest ale from outside the St Austell estate in summer. Don't be afraid to leave the rustic main bar area, and check out the snug, restaurant, lounge and the delightful garden. Local attractions include the scenic Lydford Gorge, St Petroc's Church and the Castle. The pub is situated on the NCN27 Devon Coast-Coast, Dartmoor Way and West Devon Way cycle/walking routes. Splendid real fires and occasional Morris dancing events complete the scene.

Under new stewardship since January 2019, Hannah and Jared were rewarded for their efforts with St Austell’s “New Tenants of the Year Award 2019” !

The pub is open from 0800 for breakfasts.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

Multi-roomed pub with one of the largest collections of high-backed settles in the country. The main door leads into a lobby with what looks like an off-sales hatch with colourful stained-glass window. Doors to the left and right also sport stained-glass panels. On the left, the Tinners Bar retains an old bar counter, wall seating and stone fireplace but the bar-back fitting is modern and this clearly comprised two small rooms at one time. The right-hand bar has a difficult-to-date counter and bar-back and is opened-up to a room to the right with an old stone fireplace. Beyond this is the 'lounge area' - a separate room brought into use quite recently. Finally, a tiny snug at the rear has old wall seating and two more high-backed settles which may have come from elsewhere. On the wall of the right-hand bar are examples of Lydford pennies - silver pennies of AD 1000 from the Lydford Mint

General information about historic pub interiors

Multi-roomed pub with one of the largest collections of high backed settles in the country. The main door leads into a lobby with what looks like an off-sales hatch with colourful stained and leaded window. Doors to the left and right also have stained and leaded panels in them (possibly from the 1930s?) - the one on the left is of three hares, that on the right is of a kings head. On the left the Tinners Bar retains an old bar counter, old wall seating, old stone fireplace but the bar back fitting is modern and the room was clearly two small rooms at some time in the past - was amalgamated with a former kitchen in the 1980s.

The right hand bar has a counter which may be 30/40 years old - the bar back fitting is difficult to date being a mixture of old and new wood. This bar is opened-up to a room to the right with an old stone fireplace. Beyond this is the 'lounge area' - a separate room which appears to have been brought into use in c.1990. It has a Delabole slate floor and old stone fireplace. Finally, a tiny snug at the rear has old wall seating and another two high backed settles which are loosely fitting so may have come from elsewhere. Outside gents now accessed via the patio. On the wall of the right hand bar are examples of Lydford pennies - silver pennies of AD 1000 from the Lydford Mint. .
