Richard D'Oyly Carte was a London theatre impresario who brought together dramatist WS Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. He is understood to have bought Folly Eyot island in around 1890, quickly replacing its title with his name. D'Oyly's is the cafe, bar (serving a few interesting keg beers), creperie at the end of the island - it is accessible via a bridge from the Thames towpath.
