20/04/23 - The left hand bar tables were all laid up with white table clothes and for meals. It seems it is now essentailly a dining area. The menu has also been moved up a notch or two, with the cheapest main around £16.00, and wines from around £26/£27.
A marvellous multi-roomed pub at the top of some steep steps leading from Heath St., there is a less steep incline if you approach from the tube via Holly Mount. A sensitive refurbishment some years ago opened up the rooms at the back and there is an upstairs dining room. However, for many, the jewels of this pub are the rooms containing the main bar and that off to the left as you enter, with its traditional open fire.
There is a particularly excellent sign from former owners, the Benskins brewery. Full of atmosphere and character, we can only be thankful the rooms were not swept away by several tasteless schemes mooted in the past. On seeing them you will appreciate the Grade II listing and its place on CAMRA's London Regional Inventory of historic pub interiors.
The pub was acquired by London brewers Fuller's in early 2010 but, so far, the only change has been to the beer range. Food served in the bar rooms, the back room is laid out for diners only; the upstairs dining room only opens Fri to Sun. But there is also a seating area beyond the bar in another small room. Small seating area at front mostly for the benefit of smokers, no drinks outside after 20.00. Listed as an ACV Nov 2015 following an application by the Hampstead Neighbourhood Forum.

Historic Interest
Grade II listing:- Public house. c1797, altered. Painted stucco. Slate roofs, the main facade with central stuccoed stack. 2 storeys and cellars. 3 windows and 2 window angular extension on west side. Canopy hood having a wooden pelmet extends across main front above C20 entrances and public house front. Extension has wooden public house frontage with pilasters carrying entablature with projecting cornice. Upper floors with recessed sashes. INTERIOR: retains a fixed snob-screen and C19 counter. HISTORICAL NOTE: built as the stables for Romney's House, Holly Bush Hill (qv), and converted c1807 as the catering wing when Romney's House became the Assembly Rooms.

The character of the front parts is a delight, with a simply panelled bar counter and the coved bar-back surviving from Victorian days. The two outside front doors are clear evidence of separate drinking areas inside – the low screen with a tiny door has been moved to a rear room and a baffle attached to the counter re-positioned. The right-hand part has full-height match-board panelling and has been expanded into a tiny snug, the Tavern Bar. Left is a room described, unusually, in the window glass as a coffee room, entered by two doorways (one modern) leading off the main bar.
The Holly Bush is a well known and popular Hampstead pub. There has been a good deal of alteration over the years with major extensions at the back and repositioning of old features such as etched glass but the character of the front parts is a delight. The simply panelled bar counter and the coved bar-back are survivors from Victorian days. The two outside front doors are clear evidence of separate drinking areas inside and until 2014 there was a run of low screenwork and a baffle attached to the counter which had already seen removal of the doors. Now there is only a tiny snug on the right-hand part which has full-height matchboard panelling. However, the low screen, with its tiny doorway for cleaners, has been retained and can be found in the rear dining room. The short glazed screen originally on top of the bar counter towards the centre of the room has been moved to the right hand end.
On the left is a room described in the window glass as a coffee room which is entered by two doorways (one modern) leading off the main bar. This was no doubt for more refined customers who did not want to consume alcohol. This room has baffles to the seats which have recently been re-upholstered and an ornate iron fire surround inserted
