Historic Interest
An entry in the 1791 Universal British Directory lists a White Horse at Newmarket (Mary Robson), which could refer to this pub. John Welford, born in the pub, licensee there since 2004 but there has been a Welford at the helm since 1935 when his grandparents took over. In Sep 1987 edition of Last Orders*** it was reported that John Welford (father) had been landlord since 1952. The pub was a Philips of Royston Ltd tied house when John first lived there, & the beer was still delivered by horse drawn dray. In those days the draymen stayed over night at the pub when delivering (a distance of about 26 miles) & returned to the brewery the following day. Philips were taken over by J W Green of Luton in 1949. Later Green were taken over by Flowers (of Stratford upon Avon) in 1954 who were also subsequently taken over by Whitbread & Co in 1961. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/262
