With 3 real fires and outdoor patio area this pub is a great place to enjoy a pint in winter or summer. Mainly food focused but keeping 3 great ales from regional breweries. Situated on the A51/A513 junction it is the perfect place to enjoy the delights of Cannock Chase on the door step. Close by are an unusual antiques & craft centre and the Trent & Mersey Canal. For the current guest beer see their facebook page. A blue plaque erected in 1977, describes the inn as ‘The regular meeting place of the founder members of the Trent and Mersey Canal Co. The Stone section was completed in 1771′. The first public meeting of the canal company, chaired by Earl Gower, was held here on 30 December 1765.

Historic Interest

The building was originally a hunting lodge which was converted into a coaching inn. The proprietors of the Trent and Mersey canal met there at times, including Josiah Wedgewood and James Brindley in 1760. It acquire a name of ill-repute and the name was changed to the Roebuck Inn after the original Roebuck on the other side of the road. closed some time between 1872 & 1876. The name became the Roebuck & Wolseley Arms in 1952 and firmly the Wolseley Arms in 1963, although the regulars still called it the Roebuck, or “Buck” for many years. The regular meeting place of the founder members of the Trent & Mersey Canal Co. The first public meeting of the company, chaired by Earl Gower, was held here on 30 December 1765. When work on the construction of the cansl sarted the inagural spadeful of soil was dug out by Josiah Wedgewood at a point close by the inn. The Stone section of the canal was completed in 1771.
