Sutton Hall is a stunning 16th century manor house formerly a convent and family home to the Earls of Lucan (not at the same time!). It was refurbished and re-launched by Brunning & Price in 2008. More like a stately home than a pub, it has a snug, library and seven other separate rooms used mainly for dining. Booking is recommended for dining especially at weekends. The focus is on high quality food, at appropriate prices, but drinkers are still most welcome to sample the range of up to five locally sourced real ales with no pressure to dine. Behind the bars is a line of boards listing each beer including the distance the beer has travelled from the brewery. There are up to six real ciders from boxes.
For summer visitors there are plenty of terraces and gardens for those balmy evenings, and for anyone wishing to work up an appetite before eating or who wish to walk off the calories after their meals, the pub has information on-line about local walks, incorporating a stretch of the nearby Macclesfield canal. Sutton Hall is primarily for adults and older children and dogs are welcome in the grounds or in certain rooms.
Winner of the CAMRA/English Heritage (now Historic England) award in 2009 for Best Pub Refurbishment. Most of the pub is unchanged since then.
There is also a pedestrian only access to the rear of the pub from a door in the wall of the unlit lane leading to Sutton Hall Farm, off Hall Lane. The 14A bus (Mon-Sat daytime) will stop on Selwyn drive nearby.
